Learn to express yourself with Afro-Brazilian movement! Samba is an Afro-Brazilian dance of pure expression. The quick motions of a samba dancer's feet tell a story of her limitless, unrestrained joy. The sometimes sensual, sometimes sharp and aggressive hip movements speak of defiant pride and love of self. There are countless regional, religious, and historical variations of this story. Though samba is for everyone, the organized samba schools of Rio de Janeiro are especially serious. Passistas (pah-SEES-tas) are the dancers who train hard year-round and earn the right to don breathtaking costumes at the front of Rio’s Carnaval parades. They sing and dance their hearts out to represent their communities and this is the style we study in class!
